Tolstoy's Question

The question, clear and simple, is this: Which of the two laws dost thou regard as binding for thouself - thou, every man of our present time - the law of God, which is thy conscience, or the law of man, which is of the State? Dost thou believe in the Civil Code or in the Gospel? Which command dost thou regard as most binding for thyself, the command of God or of the military statutes? Some have turned aside, thinking to escape from this question. They have wished to conceal it and to hush it up, but you, by having given a clear answer, have trust it plainly in front of all. No longer can it  be pretended that the question does not exist. In one way or another one must answer it. And this is why, no matter how few you may be, no matter even though they torture you to death, victory will inevitably be on your side, on the side of Truth and Righteousness, on the side of simple Common Sense. It is for this reason that the work you are doing, the suffering you are undergoing, unseen by the eyes of the world, is of such great importance, of such tremendous importance. That is the thought which we who share your views and to whom you are affording joy and courage and desire to convey to you.

Interpretatie van Tolstoj's Greetings to Conscientious Objectors

De vraag, helder en simpel, is de volgende: Welke van de twee wetten zie jij als bindend voor jezelf? De wet van God, je geweten, of de wet die gemaakt is door mensen, de overheid? Geloof jij in de 'Civil Code' of in de 'Gospel'? Welke gebod zie jij als bindend: het gebod van God of militair opgelegde regels?

Sommigen denken te ontsnappen aan deze vraag, maar anderen hebben laten zien, door het geven van een helder en duidelijk antwoord, dat deze vraag bestaat en op de een of andere manier een antwoord vereist.

Dit is waarom, hoe klein jullie getal ook mag zijn, de overwinning aan jullie kant behaald zal worden. De kant van Waarheid en Rechtvaardigheid zal overwinnen, de kant van het Gezonde Verstand. Hoezeer jullie ook gemarteld worden, dit is de reden van het werk dat jullie doen, van het lijden dat jullie ondergaan, ongezien door de wereld. Het is ongelooflijk belangrijk. Dat is de gedachte die wij, die jullie standpunten delen en aan wie jullie vreugde, moed en verlangen geven, aan jullie over willen dragen.
